Boston Focus Jam Observations

Falling

Here are a few notes from the focus jam we recently did with the theme of “falling.”

This was the easiest focus so far because I didn’t have to figure it out. Just by dancing I constantly noticed the falling.

The simple act of walking is a series of falls

Falling brings up fear and adrenalin. The other side of fear is trust. Falling in the dance creates a radical kind of trust in myself and my partner.

The focus gave a sense of softness to the dancing and to the jam as a whole.

I noticed several kinds of falling: the fall of my breath; a psychological “falling;” and thoughts falling away.

It’s a generous act of our partner to fall, they are relinquishing a willful approach and control of our dance.

Falling at just the right speed gives a sense of zero gravity.
There was a moment of falling into the effortless up: into the see-saw, the teeter totter, over someone’s back or shoulder up into a ride.

I enjoyed letting my partner fall: the elements of surprise, of being the trickster.

If I don’t let the weight die at the bottom I can take the momentum that’s heading down and recycle it back up.
